About the Centre
The UTS Centre for Local Government is an autonomous unit within the University of Technology, Sydney. It was established in 1991 and is now the largest centre of its kind in Australia.
The Centre's activities are diverse and include:
- professional development programs for local government personnel and associated professionals
- a Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management
- research into various aspects of local government and governance
- specialist consultancy services for councils and State and Federal agencies
- international programs and projects.
The Centre promotes a cooperative approach to local government education, research and development, and maintains close ties with a large number of local government associations, professional institutes and academic bodies in Australia, the Asia-Pacific and globally.
Mission
The Centre's mission is to support the advancement and improvement of local government both in Australia and internationally through leadership in education and research, and by providing specialist consultancy services.
Objectives
In fulfilling its mission the Centre seeks to:
- offer an integrated package of professional development and award courses
- ensure that its educational programs are supported by relevant research
- maintain a substantial consultancy business as a supporting element of its operations
- meet the needs of both urban and rural councils
- expand its international activities
- establish partnerships with people and organisations in local government both across Australia and internationally
- work closely with other areas of UTS interested in local government and governance.
Management Committee
Membership of the Centre's Management Committee comprises the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research); Deans of Business, and Design, Architecture and Building; the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures; and the Director of the Centre. The Pro-Vice Chancellor chairs the Committee.
The Management Committee deals with administrative and policy issues and provides a link to the wider UTS system.
Advisory Board
The Centre's Advisory Board plays an important role in providing advice to the Director and Management Committee on a range of operational and policy issues.
The Board's membership and structure are currently under review.
