Meeting Your Needs
Today's Local Government manager must combine a high level of professional expertise with a broad range of managerial skills and a sound understanding of the sector's changing needs and priorities. Education and professional development programs must be genuinely tailored to the Local Government environment, and keep up-to-date with the latest issues.
Education and training must also allow managers to meet their differing individual needs and provide opportunities for those Local Government managers who wish to broaden and improve their professional skills and perhaps move to other areas of employment later in their careers.
To meet your needs, the UTS Centre for Local Government offers a unique, high quality Graduate program that incorporates specialised professional development courses. The program can be completed as a Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Local Government Management, or used as a stepping-stone to a Master's degree or MBA.

Aims
The course aims to:
- provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies, in the principles and practices of local government management - with particular reference to their own organisation
- allow students to access a combination of both general and specialist study via a range of flexible and relevant delivery modes
- provide students with the learning skills to continue their own professional development through short courses or further academic study
- introduce students to University and further post-graduate studies
- provide a mix of core material and workplace action learning approaches to professional development
- allow an important degree of workplace 'specialisation' - both in course delivery method and content.
Flexibility and Responsiveness
The cornerstone of this program is its flexibility. It allows participants to prepare a personal study plan that matches the specific requirements of their work, career and other commitments.
All subjects can be studied through intensive block release, and in several cases by distance or workplace learning, or at a university or college closer to home. You can also receive credit for approved professional development courses undertaken at UTS or with another institution.

Distance Options
Depending on their particular interests and needs, participants can study more than half the program by distance or workplace learning. The Centre will help participants to identify suitable subjects offered at UTS or elsewhere, and to put together workplace learning projects and arrange mentoring by senior local government professionals.

Who Can Enrol?
Applicants wishing to enrol in the Graduate Diploma will normally need to have a first degree or equivalent qualification. However, enrolment is also available to people who do not have a degree but who can demonstrate substantial relevant experience and the ability to succeed.
How Long Does it Take?
Normally, students complete one or two subjects per semester, so that it takes 2-4 years to finish the course. However, this can vary greatly. As noted previously you may receive exemptions for other courses or professional development you have undertaken. Or you may be allowed leave of absence from the Graduate Diploma for a period of time if, say, work commitments increase - provided the Course Coordinator is agreeable.
How Much Does it Cost?
The 'standard' cost for foundation and capstone subjects is $1548 each (subject to adjustment). Students will also have to pay the relevant student's service fees to be enrolled students of UTS.Costs may vary if students undertake short courses or subjects offered elsewhere in UTS or by other organisations. Where the Centre needs to assess work completed elsewhere there will be a charge of at least $400 per assessment.

: : : C11204 Graduate Certificate in Development Assessment
Development assessment has become one of local government's most important activities. It is becoming increasingly complex and seems to need ever more staff and resources. People from a wide range of professional and technical backgrounds are working in development assessment, but many lack specialist training in the field. Even those with degrees in planning may not have completed any specific courses in development assessment.
Some people working in development assessment will wish to undertake a degree course in planning to further their careers. But for others a specialist qualification in development assessment may be more appropriate, for example to complement a first degree or TAFE qualification in building surveying, engineering, environmental studies or another relevant field.
To meet these differing individual needs, the UTS Centre for Local Government is introducing a unique, high quality Graduate Certificate program that incorporates specialised professional development courses and technical subjects.
