Short Courses


The Centre offers a wide range of short courses and workshops for local government personnel and others with an interest in local government issues.

Courses can be tailored to the requirements of individual clients or particular groups of participants, and specialised programs developed where required. Also, courses can be offered 'in-house' and in regional locations subject to viability.
All courses are prepared and taught by teams of expert practitioners drawn from the Centre's staff, Associates and affiliated consultants. They are limited to around 30 participants (sometimes less) to maximise opportunities for interaction and effective learning.

  • Certification Short Course : A new Certification Short Course is now available for building professionals wishing to become accredited certifiers. This has been approved by the Building Professionals Board.   • Building Regulation: A four-day professional development program that provides essential skills in understanding and implementing building regulation in New South Wales.

  • Advanced Building Regulation: A five-day professional development program designed to upgrade skills in the assessment of more complex multi-residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

  • Development Control: A five-day professional development program designed to improve skills and understanding in assessing proposals under the NSW Environ. Planning and Assess. Act and related legislation
    Dates 2008: 23, 24 October and 19, 20, 21 November. Cost: $1690 (GST Free).

  • Advanced Development Assessment: A five-day professional development program for more experienced practitioners seeking enhanced skills and effectiveness in a complex and rapidly changing system.
    Dates 2009: 8, 9, 10 July & 6, 7 August.  Cost: $1790 (GST Free).

  • Planning For Bushfire Prone Areas: A five-day program that provides planning and development professionals with the necessary skills and understanding to apply the relevant requirements of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, Rural Fires Act and AS 3959 (building in Bushfire Prone Areas).
    Dates 2008: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 November.  Cost: $1690 (GST Free).

  • Bushfire Hazard Reduction Course: A four-day professional development program for council staff and others responsible for recognising and mitigating bushfire hazards and issuing bush fire hazard reduction certificates.

  • Local Government Leadership: Personal and Professional Skills: A five-day program to enhance personal and professional skills, including discussions with leading practitioners and a practice workshop.
    Dates 2009: 1, 2,3 July and 30, 31 July. Cost: $1790 (GST Free).

  • Corporate Planning and Management: A five-day program for people working in local government and others with an interest in achieving better outcomes through enhanced planning processes, management systems and organisation development.
    Dates 2009: 6, 7, 8 April and 4, 5 May. Cost $1790 (GST Free).

  • Managing for Sustainability: A five-day program covering key issues in sustainability and skills needed to achieve better outcomes through more effective local environmental management.
    Dates 2009: 2, 3, 4 September and 1, 2 October. Cost: $1790 (GST Free)

 

  • Strategic Planning - a 5 day program covering different concepts and styles of strategic planning in local government and alternative approaches to implementation, with a number of recent and current case studies presented by the involved practitioners.
    Dates 2008: 15, 16, 17 October and 12,13 November. Cost: $1690 (GST Free). 

  • Community Planning and Development - a 5 day program focused on the need to strengthen the role of community (social) planning and development in local government, including emerging ideas around community engagement and the kinds of processes and techniques that can promote improved policies and effective programs.
    Dates 2009: 20, 21, 22 May and 18, 19 June. Cost: $1790 (GST Free).

Short Courses Cancellation Policy

The Centre has reviewed and updated its cancellation policy for short course fees to ensure that reasonable administrative costs are covered, but at the same time to provide a partial refund even for very late cancellations. Under the revised policy a registered participant who is unable to attend a particular course can defer to a later offer at no cost, or a substitute may attend in their place. Otherwise a refund of 90% of the fee will be paid for cancellations received up to five working days prior to course commencement, or a 50% refund for cancellations received within five working days or less.

The Centre still reserves the right to cancel or postpone a course if there are insufficient registrations, in which case a full refund will be offered.
