Overview

Local government urgently needs to nurture its next generation of leaders. This course is tailored to meet the needs of aspiring leaders both in middle and senior management, and amongst elected members.

Are you a local government professional holding a significant supervisory or management position, or a manager or elected member who aspires to a more senior and broader leadership role?  Through this Graduate Certificate you will develop advanced skills and knowledge in personal, professional, team and community leadership within the local government setting. This will enable you to make a greater contribution to improving your council's performance, as well as to gain personal recognition.

The UTS Graduate Certificate is part of a national Aspiring Leaders Partnership being established by the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government. This is designed to support efforts Australia-wide to meet the growing challenges faced by local councils and their communities

The Graduate Certificate is therefore a flexible framework that can be offered in a variety of different ways and settings around Australia in partnership with other providers. It enables a range of existing programs to be included in an accredited post-graduate university qualification.

Course Aims

The course aims to provide students with knowledge, skills and capabilities and practices of local government leadership, with particular reference to their own organisation and community. Students also develop the learning skills that allow them to continue their own professional development through short courses or further academic study

Who can enrol?

The Graduate Certificate is open to applicants with a relevant first degree, or an approved TAFE Diploma or Certificate, and/or in some cases substantial relevant work experience.  Contact the Centre for further details.

Flexibility and Responsiveness

To respond to differing needs, the UTS Centre for Local Government's graduate programs incorporate both 'academic' subjects and specialised professional development courses. This enables course participants to put together study plans that address their personal priorities. Most subjects can be studied through intensive block release, and in some cases by workplace learning.

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate may receive credit for subjects completed towards the Centre's Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management (contact the Centre for details).
