Overview

Today's Local Government manager must combine a high level of professional expertise with a broad range of managerial skills and a sound understanding of the sector's changing needs and priorities. Education and professional development programs must be genuinely tailored to the Local Government environment, and keep up-to-date with the latest issues.

Education and training must also allow managers to meet their differing individual needs and provide opportunities for those Local Government managers who wish to broaden and improve their professional skills and perhaps move to other areas of employment later in their careers.

To meet your needs, the UTS Centre for Local Government offers a unique, high quality graduate program that incorporates specialised professional development courses. The program can be completed as a Graduate Diploma/Certificate in Local Government Management, or used as a steppingstone to a Master's degree or MBA.

Aims

The course aims to:

  • provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies, in the principles and practices of local government management - with particular reference to their own organisation
  • allow students to access a combination of both general and specialist study via a range of flexible and relevant delivery modes
  • provide students with the learning skills to continue their own professional development through short courses or further academic study
  • introduce students to University and further post-graduate studies
  • provide a mix of core material and workplace action learning approaches to professional development
  • allow an important degree of workplace 'specialisation' - both in course delivery method and content.

Who can enrol?

Applicants wishing to enrol in the Graduate Diploma will normally have a first degree or equivalent qualification. Enrolment in the Graduate Diploma is also available to people who do not have a degree but who can demonstrate substantial relevant experience and the ability to succeed.

Flexibility and Responsiveness

The cornerstone of this program is its flexibility. It allows participants to prepare a personal study plan that matches the specific requirements of their work, career and other commitments.

All subjects can be studied through intensive block release, and in some cases by distance or workplace learning, or at a university or college closer to home. You can also receive credit for other approved courses undertaken at UTS or with another institution.

Testimonials

"I found the Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management stimulating, challenging and enjoyable. The course provided opportunity to obtain information from Council's engaged in best practice, to network with other course participants from a wide range of metropolitan, regional and rural councils across a range of professions, and to learn and to challenge my own thinking and practice in the workplace. I would recommend the course to Directors, Managers and Supervisors in local government"

Jenny Grinlinton
Director Social and Community Services
Queanbeyan City Council

"Participating in the course reaffirmed the complexity, challenge and opportunity of achieving great things in local government. Realising that much of the cutting edge experience exists as much amongst participants as it does "out there" makes the course very interactive, relevant and validating. The scope of the course offers a chance to stretch and develop skills no matter your strengths or weaknesses"

Edward Saulig
Strategic Planner
Fairfield City Council
